CASEE Research Affiliate: The Leonhard Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Education

Research Foci:

The Leonhard Center undertakes educational research of two types. First, we do research on the effectiveness of specific educational enhancements within departments, such as problem-based learning or cognitive apprenticeships, and of new programs within the College, such as the Entrepreneurship Minor. Second, the Center also undertakes longer term research projects that investigate the effectiveness of undergraduate engineering education at Penn State. The two major projects of this type are studies of the intellectual development of engineering undergraduates using the Perry scheme and of students' readiness for lifelong learning. Through these studies we seek to answer the following questions:

  • What types of experiences lead to growth in intellectual development?
  • What is the temporal pattern of intellectual development of Penn State undergraduate engineering students? When do the largest gains occur?
  • What is the impact of problem-based learning on intellectual development of engineering undergraduates?
  • How well are engineering undergraduates prepared to undertake lifelong learning, specifically, lifelong learning that is self-directed?
  • Are there gender differences in the preparation of engineering students to undertake lifelong learning?
  • What types of experiences improve students' readiness for lifelong learning?
