Areas of Interest: Ethics
Latest Update: December 2, 2011
The Online Ethics Center at the National Academy of Engineering provides readily accessible literature and information, case studies and references, and discussion groups on ethics in engineering and science. It focuses on problems that arise in and for the work life of engineers and scientists. It serves practitioners, educators and students, and individuals interested in professional and research ethics.
The Online Ethics Center is the centerpiece of the Center for Engineering, Ethics, and Society at the National Academy of Engineering. Its mission is to:
- to provide engineers and engineering students with resources for understanding and addressing ethically significant problems that arise in their work, and
- to serve those who are promoting learning and advancing the understanding of responsible research and practice in engineering.
The OEC website was founded by Professor Caroline Whitbeck and was brought to the NAE in 2007 through a generous gift from NAE member Harry E. Bovay Jr. An additional grant from the National Science foundation made it possible to provide new resources on the OEC designed to assist individuals and institutions seeking to respond to the new America COMPETES Act requirements.
The site was redesigned and restructured in 2008 to allow easier searches and a more user-friendly interface.
