Past Projects and Activities

The NAS and American Association of Engineering Societies (AAES) convened the first action-focused Summit on Diversity in Engineering on April 2-3, 2003 with a follow-up meeting on September 17, 2003. Engineering societies, whether or not they are members of AAES, were invited to send the appropriate volunteer and staff person who are leading the organization’s diversity programs to participate in the summit.

The Leveraging Experience to Accelerate Progress (LEAP) Conference on  Moving Towards Gender Equity in Engineering Education was held on January 14-15, 2003, in Washington DC.

The Forum on Diversity in the Engineering Workforce was a partnership of industry, government, university, education, and outreach leaders created to provide a unique medium for dialogue among stakeholders in the national engineering enterprise.

Best Practices in Managing Diversity Workshop was held on October 29-30, 2001, in Washington DC. The purpose of this workshop was to identify corporate programs that are successfully recruiting, retaining, and advancing women and underrepresented minorities in engineering careers, and to develop metrics by which to evaluate those programs.

NAE convened the National Summit on Women in Engineering, May 17-18, 1999.
