CASEE Research Community Affiliation

The CASEE Research Community consists of academic, other non-profit, and for-profit education research centers contributing to the fundamental knowledge base on education within professions and/or pursuing their own efforts to enhance the quality of engineering and/or science education. Through affiliation with CASEE they gain a mechanism to share findings, to participate in a collaborative community, and to leverage their individual efforts. Additionally, affiliates are eligible for the placement of CASEE Senior and Post-doctoral Fellows at their centers. Affiliates may display the CASEE Research Community logo on their web sites and other documentation during the term of their affiliation.

An application for affiliation with the CASEE Research Community consists of a brief letter containing the following elements.

  1. Identification of the organization unit seeking affiliation (e.g., faculty research group, department, college, university, etc.). The name of the unit of affiliation will appear on the CASEE web site.
  2. The mailing address for the unit as well as contact information for the organizational representative. If applicable, include the unit’s web address.
  3. A brief statement of the major education research foci of the unit including a sampling of the overarching research questions that guide its work. This information will be posted to our web site in order to assist CASEE Fellow applicants in developing their projects.
  4. Indication, via very brief examples, of adherence to the principles of high quality education research.  Such principles are exemplified by those contained in the NRC Report Scientific Research in Education:

    Scientific Research

  5. Poses significant questions that can be investigated empirically,
  6. Links research to relevant theory,
  7. Uses methods that permit direct investigation of the question,
  8. Provides a coherent and explicit chain of reasoning,
  9. Replicates and generalize across studies, and
  10. Discloses research to encourage professional scrutiny and critique.
  11. An alternate formulation of principles may be derived from the work of Robert Diamond in his article, "Defining Scholarship for the 21st Century", which appeared in the journal New Directions in Teaching and Learning (Vol. 2002, Issue 90, pp. 73-80)
