Understanding and Improving K-12 Engineering Education in the United States
The goal of this project, a collaboration between the National Academy of Engineering and the National Research Council's Center for Education, through its Board on Science Education, was to provide carefully reasoned guidance to key stakeholders regarding the creation and implementation of K-12 engineering curricula and instructional practices, focusing especially on the connections among science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. Technological Literacy Assessment
This project, funded by the National Science Foundation, was a joint undertaking of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Research Council Board on Testing and Assessment. The goal of the project was to determine the most viable approach or approaches for assessing technological literacy in three distinct populations in the United States: K-12 students, K-12 teachers, and out-of-school adults. State Educators' Symposium on Technological Literacy
In late 2003, the U.S. Department of Education provided funds to the National Academy of Engineering for an ambitious outreach effort to state education leaders in mathematics, science, assessment, and curriculum. The grant paid travel costs for almost 90 educators from over 40 states to come to Washington in late April for an all-day session that explored the challenges and benefits of teaching technology and engineering in grades K-12. This also is a joint effort between the NAE and the National Research Council Center for Education.
Committee on Technological Literacy
This NAE/NRC committee led a major effort to raise awareness among policymakers, the education community, and the public at large about the importance of technological literacy. In 2002, this committee released its report, Technically Speaking: Why All American Need to Know More About Technology, which is available from National Academies Press.
ITEA Standards
This initiative, completed in the first quarter of 2000, involved NAE members in extensive review of national K-12 standards for technology education.
