In 2010, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) (#1045412) to develop an online resource to provide “easy access to high quality case studies, best practices, and original scholarship in ethics in science, mathematics, and engineering.” The resource was titled Ethics CORE and the project team comprised a group with diverse backgrounds, including information science, engineering, law and education. As a founding partner of the project the NAE Center for Engineering, Ethics, and Society worked with the UIUC center to form a Joint Advisory Group of members from the NAE and its sister academies - National Academy of Science (NAS) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) - to advise CEES and the Online Ethics Center website on how to assist the UIUC in setting up the website and on priorities for a workshop on ethics education.
