Research and Networks for Decision Support in the NOAA Sectoral Applications Research Program: (Print This)

The new National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Sectoral Applications Research Program (SARP) focuses on the need for climate-related information to inform decisions in particular “sectors,” defined by resources (such as coastal or water resources, forests, or agricultural lands) and decision domains (such as emergency management and urban planning). The National Research Council was asked to establish a panel to recommend how NOAA could design SARP to function in changing circumstances. The panel held a workshop in November 2006 to explore the purpose, needs, and structural features of SARP, and to collect information from climate scientists, individuals, and representatives of organizations involved in providing scientific information to inform decisions, decision makers who use climate information, and evaluation experts. Representatives of NOAA and SARP also attended the workshop. The results of the workshop were used to support the panel's recommendations.Cover
