Biography

Zhou Ji is president of both the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS). He has previously served as president of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, director-general of the Department of Science and Technology of Hubei Province, mayor of Wuhan, and China’s minister of education.

Dr. Zhou was actively involved in research and development for optimal design, computer-aided design, and numerical control technology. He advanced the algorithm of direct interpolation for numerical control (NC) machining and the algorithm of monotonic analysis for optimization. He and his team developed a series of NC equipment and software packages on mechanical computer-aided design (CAD), which has been widely used in industries such as machinery, aeronautics, astronautics, and energy.

Dr. Zhou was elected a member of CAE in 1999 and a foreign member of the US National Academy of Engineering in 2013. He has been honored several times with China’s State Award for Science and Technology Progress.

He graduated from Tsinghua University in 1970, and received his PhD in mechanical engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1984.
