Anita K. Jones is University Professor Emerita at the University of Virginia, where she has served as chair of the Department of Computer Science. She was director of Defense Research and Engineering for the US Department of Defense, overseeing the DOD science and technology program from 1993 to 1997. She is currently a director of CyPhy Works, a trustee of InQTel, a fellow of the Defense Science Board, and a member of the MIT Lincoln Laboratories Advisory Board. Dr. Jones is an NAE member and fellow of the ACM, IEEE, and AAAS. She has received the NAE’s Bueche Award, the AAAS Philip Abelson Award, the Computing Research Association’s Service Award, the IEEE Founders’ Medal, and the Ada Lovelace Award from the Association of Women in Computing. She has been awarded honorary degrees by the University of Southern California, Carnegie Mellon University, and Duke University. The US Navy named a seamount in the North Pacific Ocean for her. Dr. Jones holds an AB from Rice University in mathematics, an MA from the University of Texas, Austin, in literature, and a PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.
