Saturday, September 29: NAE orientation for the Class of 2018.

 

Sunday, September 30: Brunch will be available at 10:30 am and the public program will begin at 12:00 noon. NAE Chair Gordon R. England will give opening remarks, followed by the president’s address and then the induction of 83 new members and 16 foreign members who were elected in February. We will present the Simon Ramo Founders Award, the Arthur M. Bueche Award, and the Bernard M. Gordon Prize Lecture.

During the afternoon program two distinguished speakers will present plenary lectures to address the challenges of securing computing devices and protecting both individual and collective privacy. Mike Walker, principal researcher at Microsoft, will talk about personal security of computers, phones, and Internet of Things devices. Diane Greene, chief executive officer at Google Cloud, will discuss the security of the cloud and large-scale global data centers.

Monday, October 1: The day will begin with the NAE business session, followed by the forum, continuing the discussion on cybersecurity. Mike Walker will be joined by Batya Friedman, professor in the Information School at the University of Washington; Scott Renfro, software engineer at Facebook; and Dr. Lea Kissner, global lead of privacy technologies at Google.

The afternoon will be devoted to NAE section meetings, which will be held at the NAS Building and the Keck Center.
