The meeting will feature two plenary lectures on October 8, followed by a forum panel on October 9. The plenary lecturers will highlight engineering research and innovation in two distinct areas of the theme: “Autonomy and Ethics” presented by Patrick Lin of California Polytechnic State University, and “Autonomy and Artificial Intelligence” presented by Joichi Ito of MIT Media Lab .

During the panel, four presenters will discuss the advances of autonomous technologies in the air, at sea, on land, and in space. Claire Tomlin of UC Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, Jim Bellingham of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Raj Rajkumar of Carnegie Mellon University, and MiMi Aung of NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory will address developments in autonomous technologies used in unmanned aircraft and space exploration systems, autonomous ships, and self-driving cars.

The Annual Meeting audience will include academy members and new inductees, members of the science and engineering policy communities, educators, students, news media, family, friends, and the general public. A live webcast of the event will be available to the public on the NAE website. We hope that the presentations will inspire our audience and motivate engineering contributions needed to meet these autonomy challenges.
