Award for Achievement and Distinguished Service
distinguished scientist, educator, and leader in science and technology policy has exemplified in his achievements the highest standards of the scientific and education professions; and
WHEREAS Dr. Alberts, as President of the National Academy of Sciences from 1993 to 2005, rendered great service to the engineering profession in the United States and to the National Academy of Engineering through his deep understanding and appreciation of the interplay of science, engineering, and medicine and their importance to the national welfare and through his critical leadership during a time of crisis in the leadership of the NAE that helped ensure the continuing vitality of the institution; and
WHEREAS Throughout his tenure, he endeavored to make the National Academy of Engineering an equal partner with the National Academy of Sciences – from alternating the chairmanship of NRC Governing Board meetings to creating the “National Academies” brand, which transformed the working relationships among the Academies and the NRC, contributed to enormous growth in the National Research Council, and had a profound impact on the community that interacts with the National Academies; and
WHEREAS Dr. Alberts led efforts to develop a set of National Science Education Standards to improve science, mathematics, engineering, and technology education in America, catalyzed creation of the InterAcademy Council to expand international science collaboration, and led other efforts that contributed to the integrity and reputation of the National Academies as the preeminent institutions for providing outstanding scientific and technical information and service to the nation; and
NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the National Academy of Engineering hereby designates Bruce Alberts as a Distinguished Honoree of the Academy in recognition of his outstanding achievements and his distinguished service to the National Academy of Engineering, and advancement of science and education and the nation's welfare.
