Whereas
Arnold O. Beckman
distinguished engineer, scientist, educator, and industrialist, has exemplified by his achievements the highest standards of the scientific and engineering professions; and Whereas Dr. Beckman has, throughout his career, rendered outstanding and unstinting public service to scientific and engineering education to industry. and to the nation; and Whereas Dr. Beckman, through his generous and wise philanthropy, has made important provisions for the future well-being of scientific and engineering education and for the active participation of scientists and engineers in shaping national policy and assuring national leadership in science and technology; and Whereas Dr. Beckman has together with his wife Mabel Beckman, through their magnificent gift of the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering to be situated in Irvine, California, greatly enhanced the resources and capabilities of the Academies, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council to operate on the national and international scene in advancing science, technology, medicine, and their contributions to human welfare; Now, therefore, the council of the National Academy of Engineering hereby designates Arnold O. Beckman as a distinguished honoree of the Academy in recognition of his outstanding achievements and his distinguished service to the National Academy of Engineering, the advancement of science and engineering, and the nation's welfare.
