NAE Distinguished Honoree
Whereas
Ralph John Cicerone
Distinguished scientist, educator, and leader in science and technology policy has exemplified in his achievements the highest standards of the scientific and educational professions; and
WHEREAS Dr. Cicerone, as president of the National Academy of Sciences from 2005 to 2016, rendered great service to the engineering profession in the United States and to the National Academy of Engineering through his deep understanding and appreciation of the interplay of science and engineering and their importance to the national welfare; and
WHEREAS his remarkable and lasting contribution to the nation is the formation and public presentation of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, a truly pioneering and visionary statement of the balance of responsibilities and partnerships of the three national academies; and
WHEREAS he oversaw exceptional, large-scale, interdisciplinary initiatives—the post–Deepwater Horizon Gulf of Mexico project, America’s Climate Choices, and the Roundtable on Risk, Resilience, and Extreme Events—engaging scientific and engineering expertise to ensure the safety and well-being of the nation and its citizens;
NOW THEREFORE the Council of the National Academy of Engineering hereby designates Ralph John Cicerone as a Distinguished Honoree of the Academy in recognition of his outstanding achievements, his meritorious service to the National Academy of Engineering and his advancement of the sciences, education, and the national welfare.
