Paul B. Thompson has a Ph.D. in philosophy and has written extensively on ethical and environmental issues in contemporary agriculture. His book The Spirit of the Soil: Agriculture and Environmental Ethics (1995) was one of the first philosophical discussions of modern farming, and Sacred Cows and Hot Potatoes: Agrarian Myths and Policy Realities (1992, with four co-authors) won the American Agricultural Economics Association Award for Excellence in Communication. He now holds the W. K. Kellogg Chair in Agricultural, Food and Community Ethics at Michigan State University.
