About Election to the National Academy of Engineering

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. NAE membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature" and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."  NAE members, who number more than 2600, are highly accomplished engineering professionals representing a broad spectrum of engineering disciplines working in business, academia, and government.

Election to the National Academies is an honor, but with that honor comes service.  NAE members are part of the overall National Academies structure, which includes the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Medicine and the National Research Council. The National Academies convene the nation’s most knowledgeable engineers, scientists, health professionals, and other experts who volunteer their time on initiatives that help guide the development of federal laws and regulations, improve the effectiveness of government programs, shape the direction of research fields, and inform public knowledge and dialogue about issues of critical importance.

Election of new NAE members is the culmination of a yearlong process. The ballot is set in December and the final vote for membership occurs during January. Individuals in the newly-elected class will be formally inducted during the NAE's Annual Meeting on Oct. 1, 2023. A list of the new members and international members, with their primary affiliations at the time of election and a brief statement of their principal engineering accomplishments, is available on the NAE website at www.nae.edu.
