Biography

Karma Sawyer is responsible for shaping and managing a vision and strategy to ensure that Pacific Northwest National Laboratory addresses the Department of Energy’s most important challenges in energy efficiency, clean energy, and electricity infrastructure. The EI&B Division consists of more than 400 staff members in six technical groups. Before joining PNNL, Dr. Sawyer was the program manager for Emerging Technologies at DOE’s Building Technologies Office, where she developed and executed multiyear R&D strategies across a range of building technologies. She also worked collaboratively with the national labs and external stakeholders to advance cross-cutting initiatives such as Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings, Advanced Building Construction, and Grid Modernization. She was previously an assistant program director and fellow at ARPA-E (2010–13), focusing on carbon capture and thermal storage technologies. Dr. Sawyer has a BS from Syracuse University and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, both in chemistry.
