***Energy Transitions Focus of NAE Annual Meeting***

Why Now?  Net-zero emissions. As a goal, this is one of the most critical and defining challenges of the post-industrial era. Even today, we remain under the dense cloud generated by the infrastructure upon which our modern technology was built and its effectiveness is dependent. With all of our creativity and capability, rising from under this cloud to achieve the net-zero standard would require enormous coordination and cooperation across sectors, industries and nations. This is the time for engineers to partner with other sectors and prepare for bold action.

Why NAE? The 2022 NAE Annual Meeting taps into the depth of knowledge of our member-experts whose expertise covers a broad range of energy topics including solar power, renewable energy, modular reactors, and more. Their decades-long experience finding creative solutions, researching data and sharing information provide insights into technology pathways to a clean energy transition.

Event Highlights

New Member Inductions
After two years of meeting virtually, 2022 marks the return to convening our NAE community in-person to induct new members from the Classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022 into the Academy! NAE Chair Donald C. Winter will give opening remarks, followed by the president’s address by NAE President John L. Anderson and the separate inductions of each of the three classes.

Awards Celebrations
Recipients of the Simon Ramo Founders Award, Arthur M. Bueche Award, Gibbs Brothers Medal, and the Bernard M. Gordon Prize Lecture will be recognized, followed by an evening celebratory reception.

Special Lecture:  Meeting the Energy-Climate Challenge
Civilization’s systems of energy supply and use are the principal drivers of global climate change, and the need to limit the harm from that change constitutes the most demanding driver of transformation in those systems. This energy-climate nexus poses one of the greatest scientific, engineering, and policy challenges of our time. NAE Member John P. Holdren, Teresa and John Heinz Research Professor of Environmental Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, will discuss the challenges and what lies ahead.

Forum:  Transitioning to Net-Zero Carbon: Engineering Challenges and Opportunities
A line-up of energy experts will present diverse views that address both the challenges and opportunities. Television personality and founder/CEO of Future Engineers, Deanne Bell, will moderate the panel.

Yvonne C. Brill Lecture & Reception:  Are We Alone? Grand Challenges in Solar System Exploration

The search for signs of past or present life beyond Earth is a profound human endeavor that has occupied a place in our consciousness since humans first looked skyward. This quest requires an advance in space exploration capabilities, technologies, and knowledge that also informs our future on our home planet and the pace of human exploration beyond it. After decades of hard work, and through an interconnected set of missions, NASA stands poised to address this timeless question along multiple arcs. In this lecture, Dr. Braun will describe the scientific opportunities, locales, technologies, and missions from which we may advance our understanding of the potential for life elsewhere in the universe. The goals and present status of multiple astrobiology missions planned for the next decade will be highlighted.

URMNAE will host a business meeting and lunch to welcome URMs into the NAE and plan future activities to increase DEI in engineering and the NAE.

New for 2022! The Expo provides one-on-one opportunities for new members to learn more about getting involved in NAE through the members and staff who lead the myriad programs, projects and activities.

Golden Bridge Society Reception & Dinner (invitation only)
Members and friends of the National Academy of Engineering whose cumulative giving of $20,000 to $99,999 has earned them a place in the Golden Bridge Society are invited to a society-member-only dinner and reception.

Section Dinners
Many of the NAE 12 engineering sections host special dinners for their members. These dinners will be listed in the final program that will be available onsite.
