Biography

Paulo Monteiro is the Roy W. Carlson Distinguished professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the U.C. Berkeley. He earned engineering degrees from Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil and University of California, Berkeley. Prof. Monteiro has published over 280 archival papers on topics that include micro and nanostructure of concrete, poromechanics of concrete durability, development of green concrete and sustainable construction, incorporation of carbon sequestration materials into the civil infrastructure, and advanced soft and hard synchrotron techniques to characterize materials, and fluid flow in shales.  He co-authored a comprehensive textbook on concrete that is widely used and has been translated into Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, and Persian. Prof. Monteiro has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering and has received the following awards for this research: Stephen Brunauer Award (twice), Premio Ari TorresWason Medal for Materials Research, and NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award.
