For creation of digital image correlation-based measurement technology and its dissemination through commercialization and applications in industry.
Biography

Professor Sutton's technical interests have been concentrated in solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, high rate loading effects in materials, joining of materials, bio-materials and structural mechanics with emphasis on infrastructure applications. His primary focus has been in the development and application of the digital image correlation experimental methods to acquire quantitative full field measurements of unprecedented detail to improve our understanding of phenomena in the aforementioned problems. He has applied his research to metallic structures, including friction-stir-welded aluminum aerospace components. He has applied his research to pre-stressed concrete beams, masonry brick walls, high speed rail track and bridge structures. He also has applied his research to the study of ductile fracture in thing sheet aerospace alloys, resulting in an American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard for characterizing their fracture resistance. Recently, he has applied his research to fiber composites, including uncured thermoset tows to quantify their resistance to separation after bonding. His recent high rate loading studies for cellular materials has employed imaging systems capable of acquiring images at 10 million fps to understand the response of these materials. To support his research interests, Professor Sutton is a life member and past-president of the Society for Experimental Mechanics, member of the  American Society of Mechanical Engineers, founding president of the International Digital Image Correlation Society and a contributor to ASTM. In support of his educational activities, Professor Sutton co-authored in 2009 the only book on the Digital Image Correlation methods and has used it in both graduate and undergraduate educational activities. As co-founder of Correlated Solutions, Inc. in 1997, Professor Sutton continues to work on issues of importance for improving and disseminating the technology, as well as expanding its range of applicability, for industries, labs and academic institutions worldwide.
