Biography

Xuedong Huang is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Zoom. Prior to Zoom, he was at Microsoft where he served as Azure AI CTO and Technical Fellow. In 1993, Huang joined Microsoft Research as the founder of Microsoft’s speech technology group. He has been driving Microsoft’s spoken language efforts for over three decades. In addition to bringing speech recognition to the mass market, Huang led Microsoft AI teams achieving several industry’s first human parity milestones in speech recognition, machine translation, natural language understanding, and computer vision. He helped Azure Cognitive Services from its inception, including Azure Speech, Vision, Language, and OpenAI Services, to becoming a leading industrial AI platform covering hundreds languages and serving billions customers worldwide.

Huang holds over 170 US patents and has published over 100 papers and 2 books. Huang is an IEEE and ACM fellow, and an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received IEEE Bose Industrial Leader Award in 2023. 

Huang received his PhD from the University of Edinburgh in 1989, his MS from Tsinghua University in 1984, and his BS from Hunan University in 1982. He worked as a postdoc in 1989 at Carnegie Mellon University before joining the faculty of School of Computer Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University.
