Biography

Sir James Dyson OM CBE FRS FREng is the Founder of Dyson. Working alongside his son Jake, and with Dyson’s 5,850 engineers and scientists, he leads the development of new technologies and products spanning autonomous vacuums, connected air purifiers, fans and humidifiers, lighting, hand dryers, hairdryers, and by 2021, electric vehicles.

Dyson technology is available in 82 markets and 95% of Dyson’s turnover is from outside the UK. The company is investing £2.5billion in new technologies such as solid state batteries, high speed motors, robotic vision systems, machine learning and material science.

In September 2018, Dyson welcomed its second cohort of Undergraduate students to study at the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology. This is the first Institution of its kind and offers an alternative to a traditional university degree, and pays the students a salary. The degree combines academic learning with hands-on experience working on technology projects.

Alongside Dyson James actively farms 35,000 acres in Lincolnshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset. They use the latest technology and techniques, employing and training young people in UK agriculture and strives to be at the vanguard of good, environmentally sustainable farming.

Sir James was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2015, and in the 2016 New Year Honours was appointed to the Order of Merit. James was awarded a CBE in 1996 and a Knight Bachelor in the 2007.
