The National Academy of Engineering, in conjunction with the Division of Engineering and Physical Sciences (DEPS) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) will establish a Roundtable on Linking Academic Engineering Research and Defense Basic Science. The roundtable will meet annually to discuss issues of research and engineering relevant to the mission of the Basic Research Office of the Department of Defense. This proposal is for funding to operate the roundtable for three years.

The members of the roundtable will include Deans of engineering schools and University Vice Presidents/Provosts for Research. Members shall be appointed by the President of the National Academy of Sciences, in consultation with the President of the National Academy of Engineering, with one member designated as Chair. The Director of the Basic Research Office will serve as a member of the roundtable in an ex officio capacity.

Topics for discussion will be determined jointly by the Director and the Chair of the roundtable. Working groups on specific topics may be established as either ad hoc or standing groups, as determined by Chair and the Director jointly. The Chair may invite other individuals to participate in meetings of either the roundtable or working groups on a case by case basis. The Director may invite other Defense Department officials and other government officials to participate as appropriate.

It is anticipated that the full roundtable will meet annually and that working groups will meet twice a year.

The roundtable will be supported by NAE and DEPS professional staff and will draw upon the resources of other units of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine as appropriate.
