Biography

Paul L. Freedman is co-founder and longtime CEO of LimnoTech. Since 1975, Paul and his company have contributed to over 3500 water projects throughout the US and around the globe. Paul has been an early pioneer and ongoing thought and technology leader in many fields related to water including  computer modeling, watershed management, TMDLs, water quality assessment, sensor and monitoring innovations, water quality standards, eutrophication and lake management, urban stormwater management, and sustainability. A cornerstone of his career has been the use of computer modeling, latest scientific research, and decision support tools to promote sound actions, policies, and regulation. Paul and LimnoTech, under his leadership, are recognized for numerous advances in the computer simulation of water resources. This includes the transition from mainframe to user-friendly PC models; probabilistic modeling; graphic and GIS data interfaces; toxics modeling in lakes, rivers and sediments; eutrophication modeling; and integrated watershed-water body models. He and his firm have been leading researchers on many large systems including the Great Lakes, and numerous other water bodies and watersheds from Chesapeake Bay to the Gulf of Mexico to rivers, estuaries and lakes coast to coast. Over the last decade, Paul has helped define new methods and approaches for assessing and designing water sustainability approaches for corporations. He has over 300 presentations and publications, has conducted dozens of training courses and workshops, and chaired five national conferences. He is a past President of the Water Environment Federation, and has held other positions of leadership in professional societies, including founding WEF committees on Watershed Management and Sustainability, chairing a rewrite of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers certification exam for Water Supply and Wastewater, as well as co-authoring the first AAEE certification exam on Sustainability. Paul was also founding co-chair of the Federal Advisory Committee on Water Resource Adaptation to Climate Change and a longtime member of the Federal Advisory Committee on Water Information.
