The NAE has completed several projects focusing on Technological Literacy. These projects addresses important issues raised by the pervasive role of engineering and technology in society.
A technologically literate person has knowledge of technology and is capable of using it effectively to accomplish various tasks. He or she can think critically about technological issues and acts accordingly.
This program was initiated in 2000 with a project that engaged NAE members in a extensive review of technological literacy standards developed by the International Technology Education Association (ITEA). Additional projects following including a major effort to raise awareness among policymakers, the education community, and the public at large about the importance of technological literacy and the release of Technically Speaking, a report and website that stressed why all Americans need to know more about technology.
