Atlas of AI: Mapping the world of artificial intelligence

Machine learning systems are already playing a significant role in many of our social institutions, including healthcare, education, hiring and criminal justice. As these systems become embedded into our lives, they also become entangled with existing socio-economic structures. Many scholars are now showing how these systems can reproduce and intensify forms of structural bias and discrimination. In this talk, Dr. Crawford shares insights from her new book, Atlas of AI, to show how the large-scale deployment of machine learning systems intersects with existing systems of power. Prof. Crawford offers paths forward for research and policy to address these underlying dynamics in the context of the current pandemic and growing economic inequality in the United States.
