2023 NAE National Meeting – “Engineering: Touching Every Corner of Our Lives”

2023 NAE National Meeting
Engineering: Touching Every Corner of Our Lives
February 9, 2023

Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering
Irvine, CA

Engineering is all around us—from the cars we drive to the space shuttles that take us to the moon, from the lightbulbs that illuminate our world to the telescopes that help us see new worlds, from the appliances that cook our food to the crops that provide that food. Roads, bridges, buildings, cars, planes, phones, computers, appliances, medical equipment… the contributions—and the possibilities—of engineering are endless!

Engineering is present in every corner of our lives, contributing to our well-being, boosting our economy, and informing continued innovation.

The 2023 NAE National Meeting explores myriad ways engineering is improving our lives.

** Distinguished Gilbreth Speakers **

Four outstanding young engineers will showcase their work as part of the prestigious Gilbreth Lecture Series:

  • “Design of Space Systems to Enable In-Space Assembly and Servicing” – Bo Naasz, Senior Technical ISAM and RPOC System Capability Lead, National Aeronautics and Space Administration
  • “Materials-Based Approaches to Prevent Biofilm-Associated Infections” – Caitlin Howell, Associate Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Maine
  • “Large-Scale 3D Printing of Industrial Materials” – Brian Post, Senior Research Staff Member and Group Leader, Manufacturing Systems Design, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
  • “Equitable Building Decarbonization through Electrification” – Karma Sawyer, Division Director, Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

The 2023 Gilbreth Lecture speakers are selected from among presenters at The Grainger Foundation Frontiers of Engineering symposia. Established in 2001 by the NAE Council to recognize outstanding young engineers and showcase their work to wider audiences, the Gilbreth Lectures honor Lillian M. Gilbreth (1878–1972), a pioneer of industrial and management engineering and the first woman elected to the National Academy of Engineering (1965).

NAE is again working with Cabrillo High School in Long Beach, Samueli Academy in Santa Ana, and University of California, Irvine (UCI) to identify high school students as well as recent UCI entrants who are interested in careers in engineering or science. Approximately 200 students are expected to attend the program.

NAE Covid-19 Policy

To prevent infection and spread of the COVID-19 virus, and as an integral measure toward the safety and health of everyone in our buildings, the National Academies require all individuals who enter our facilities to be up to date with their vaccinations against COVID-19 per CDC guidance. Visitors may choose to wear a mask or respirator but are not required to do so.  More information is available on our website.
