Randy Atkins: The website – howsmystreet-dot-net – allows you to drop a red, yellow, or green marker and post comments on a Google street map to indicate a road that’s impassible, partially blocked, or clear.  Priya Narasimhan, a Carnegie Mellon engineer, led the design.

Priya Narasimhan: You can see the entire map of the city and how all these red areas, these non-passable areas have been tagged over time. People genuinely like to help each other and, if asked, people will.

Randy Atkins: Narasimhan says this amplifies the power of technologies like Twitter and Facebook, which are also used on the site.

Priya Narasimhan: The power of multiple voices helps when an individual piece of technology alone might not.

Randy Atkins: With the National Academy of Engineering, Randy Atkins, 103-point-5 F-M and WTOP-dot-com.

There are already plans to hook this into G-P-S as well.
