Complete genetic codes from hundreds of bird and human flu virus samples are now being rapidly extracted using new bioengineering techniques.  Steven Salzberg, of the University of Maryland, says the effort is creating a clearer picture of how flu viruses evolve and become more deadly.  He thinks computers could detect patterns that will better predict if, and when, bird flu mutations might allow its spread among people.  Salzberg says the research will also improve the odds of making effective vaccines against any flu virus.  With the National Academy of Engineering, Randy Atkins, WTOP Radio.
