Randy Atkins: Cyber connections make the operation of infrastructure convenient.  Modern electric grids, dams, nuclear plants, and more are often controlled remotely.  Engineer and Managing Partner of Applied Control Solutions Joe Weiss says the tradeoff may be vulnerability to hacking.

Joe Weiss: You don’t have to be there, you don’t have to even be in this country or this hemisphere, to cause an attack on physical equipment.

Randy Atkins: Weiss, and many others, worry there aren’t enough safeguards to prevent major attacks, like taking the electric grid down…for months.

Joe Weiss: Can you do these things?  Absolutely.  Why haven’t they been done yet?  I don’t know.

Randy Atkins: With the National Academy of Engineering, Randy Atkins, 103-point-5 F-M and WTOP-dot-com.
