Randy Atkins:  The tunnel option was preferred by a state-commissioned independent panel of engineers that included Brenda Bohlke, who’s still hoping to make it happen.

Brenda Bohlke:  We’re proposing to use one large-diameter tunnel.

Randy Atkins:  A huge machine would chomp away earth, kick it out the back, and install the tunnel’s concrete liner…all at the same time.  Bohlke says it would take one trip, working well below Tysons Corner streets and even buried utilities.

Brenda Bohlke:  We will be able to have room to lay in the tracks both for the inbound and outbound tunnel.

Randy Atkins:  Such large tunnel technology is being used in Europe and Asia, but would be a first in the U.S.  With the National Academy of Engineering, Randy Atkins, WTOP Radio.
