Randy Atkins:  Do you risk not wearing a life jacket because it's uncomfortable, constricting, or a fashion-buster?  Adam Malcom, a University of Virginia mechanical engineering student, may take away your excuses.

Adam Malcom:  If you just have a belt around your waist, you don't have any problems with maneuverability.  It's cool, it doesn't look stupid.

Randy Atkins:  Malcom just won an international competition for a concept that tucks sixteen deflated air chambers inside a belt.  Their inflation is triggered by pressure sensors if you fall in the water.

Adam Malcom:  Have you ever seen the party favor that you blow into that kind of unfurls?

Randy Atkins:  Malcom says that would happen in just two seconds.

Adam Malcom:  They would catch underneath your arms and basically act as an inner-tube.

Randy Atkins:  With the National Academy of Engineering, Randy Atkins, WTOP Radio.
