Randy Atkins:  Live Doppler radar TV images can focus on potentially damaging weather, but don’t give emergency responders and businesses much time to react.

Lloyd Treinish:  They want that kind of geographic scale, but they want that information twelve or eighteen hours into the future.

Randy Atkins:  Lloyd Treinish, an IBM researcher, says their “Deep Thunder” supercomputer can detail likely weather patterns for areas about the size of your neighborhood, in animated 3-D color.

Lloyd Treinish:  That includes the physics for how the atmosphere interacts with the land or the water, as well as how clouds form.
