Biography

Denis A. Cortese is a Foundation Professor at Arizona State University (ASU), director of the university’s Center for Healthcare Delivery and Policy, and president of the nonprofit Healthcare Transformation Institute based in Phoenix. He is a former president and CEO of the Mayo Clinic, and currently serves on the boards of directors for Essence Global Holding Corporation and Pinnacle West Capital Corporation.

He formerly served on the health advisory board of RAND, Health Care Leadership Council (including as chair), Harvard/Kennedy Health Policy Group, and board of directors of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Cerner. For the National Academies, he chaired the Roundtables on Value and Science-Driven Health Care and on Evidence-based Medicine, and was an appointed member of the Division Committee on Engineering and Physical Sciences and Committee on Engineering and the Delivery of Health Care.

Dr. Cortese is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, national associate of the National Research Council, and honorary member of the Royal College of Physicians (London) and Academia Nacional de Medicina de México. He has received the Ellis Island Award (2007), National Healthcare Leadership Award (2009), and American College of Medical Quality Founders Award (2017).

He has a BS in biology from Franklin and Marshall College, an MD from Temple University Schol of Medicine, and residency training in internal medicine and pulmonary diseases at the Mayo Clinic.
