Biography

William Stead is McKesson Foundation Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). He is a founder of biomedical informatics and has built his career on envisioning the potential of informatics and computation to transform health, biomedicine, and research.

He joined Duke’s faculty and codeveloped the Medical Record (TMR), one of the first practical electronic medical record systems. At VUMC (since 1991) he guided development of the Department of Biomedical Informatics and operational units providing information infrastructure to support health care, education, and research programs of the Medical Center. He implemented methods to support system-based care, learning, and research and progress toward personalized medicine and population health management. As chief strategy officer, he scaled this work to facilitate shifts in governance and organizational processes, quality improvement and research, and medical education and training.

In 2021 he turned to research on the feasibility of scaling diagnostic and prognostic prediction research across the health system by annealing population-scale data and high-throughput computational methods with targeted clinical epidemiology studies.

Dr. Stead is a founding fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) and American Institute for Engineering in Biology and Medicine, and a founding member of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (2000) and received AMIA’s Donald A.B. Lindberg Award for Innovation in Informatics (2005), ACMI’s Morris F. Collen Award of Excellence (2007), and AMIA’s first William W. Stead Award for Thought Leadership in Informatics (2013), created in his honor.

He received his BA and MD from Duke University.
