Biography

Roger L. McCarthy is the founder and owner of McCarthy Engineering. He previously worked 30+ years at Exponent, Inc. (formerly Failure Analysis Associates, Inc.) where he became CEO and chair.

He has investigated some major disasters over the decades. He currently chairs the National Academies committee on Analysis of Cause(s) of Failure and Collapse of the 305-Meter Telescope at the Arecibo Observatory, and he served on the Academies’ Committee on the Analysis of Causes of the Deepwater Horizon Explosion, Fire, and Oil Spill to Identify Measures to Prevent Similar Accidents in the Future. He was part of Lord Cullen’s expert committee for the Piper Alpha investigation, and investigated the loss of the Amoco Cadiz on behalf of Amoco and the grounding of the Exxon Valdez on behalf of Exxon. He has appeared on the History Channel, Myth Busters, Discovery, Modern Marvels, and the National Geographic Channel.

Dr. McCarthy was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2004 and is now treasurer (2021–25). He also serves on the board of Shui on Land (SOL), Ltd. (瑞安房地产). In 1992 he was appointed to a two-year term on the President’s Commission on the National Medal of Science.

He holds a BSE from the University of Michigan and MS and PhD degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,all in mechanical engineering.
