Brian Post’s research at the Department of Energy’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility includes the development of large-scale additive manufacturing (AM) processes capable of producing large parts (8' × 20' × 6', 1000+ lbs) at rates 1000× faster than current commercially available systems. Dr. Post has been a technical leader on all of ORNL’s large-scale additive manufacturing research, including the Big Area Additive Manufacturing System (BAAM), which has been commercialized and was used to make the world’s first 3D-printed car, the Strati, and the ORNL 3D-printed Shelby Cobra. ORNL has also used the system to create submarines, wind turbine blade molds, a mobile home, and the production tooling for precast concrete installations. Dr. Post’s team is now developing a rapidly deployable cable-driven 3D printer for printing concrete objects at construction scale (e.g., 100' × 100' × 30'). Other projects include the use of AM systems to develop novel robotic technologies, including underwater manipulation systems, and prosthetic applications. He has a BS in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, and MS and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
