Randy Atkins: Research shows that dislodged cancer cells circulating in the blood find and attach to growing tumors. So Scott Brown, a University of Florida engineer, wants to use them to deliver drugs to new growths.

Scott Brown: If we take the cells from the primary tumor and load them with a therapeutic, there’s a very high likelihood that they’ll actually end up trafficking to those sites.

Randy Atkins: Of course, Brown would kill those removed cells before injecting them back into the patient.

Scott Brown: And that makes sure that when we reintroduce the cancer cells that they’re not going to create new cancers.

Randy Atkins: The drugs they’d deliver are tiny particles that can both be seen through imaging techniques and then locally triggered to destroy tumors. With the National Academy of Engineering, Randy Atkins, WTOP News.
