One of the missions of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is to promote the essence of engineering i.e. Creating Solutions to the Problems of the People and the Planet. The Grand Challenges for Engineering is a cross disciplinary initiative whose goal is the “Continuation of life on the planet, making our world more sustainable, healthy, safe and joyful”. This effort has two components - “R&D” and “Talent building” and obviously there needs to be a seamless integration of the two efforts in order to make any significant progress. Grand Challenges Scholars Program (GCSP) is an outcome based program that offers appropriate and relevant experiences to prepare students to address the Grand Challenges for the 21st century. GCSP students will not only have deep disciplinary backgrounds but also will clearly appreciate that solutions must be Feasible (science and engineering fundamentals), Viable (economic and business case) and Desirable (context of culture and social policy).

According to the NAE president has the structure of a movement more than a project, where inspiration is driven by the power of the idea while the decisions to contribute are made locally and independently. The educational institutions find their own pathways for delivering the five key “competencies” of GCSP program, which are,

  1. Research/creative –cutting-edge project experience on GC like topic
  2. Multidisciplinarity – intellectual fusion of academic disciplines including social sciences
  3. Business/Entrepreneurship  – viable business model for implementation
  4. Global/Multicultural – understanding through global  (or local) experience
  5. Social consciousness - through service learning

In order for this movement to take root and thrive, it has to be a truly global partnership between the various stakeholders around the world to address these challenges which are global in scope. Grand Challenge Scholar Program Network office has been created at NAE to be the catalyst and facilitator for broadening and deepening the impact of the program across the US and around the world by helping to forge vibrant partnerships and a shared vision between universities, engineering societies, foundations, industry, civil society and governments.
