National Academy of Engineering

Award for Achievement and Distinguished Service

Whereas

Frederick P. Seitz

distinguished scientist, educator, public servant, and leader in science and technology policy advice to government has exemplified in his achievements the highest standards of the scientific and educational professions and contributed greatly to guiding the wise and effective use of science, engineering, and technology in the public interest; and

WHEREAS as a leader in guiding, overseeing, and advising on government, university, and industry research and development programs in war and peace, he has had a major role in shaping the policies and programs that led the nation to pre-eminence in science and engineering since World War II; and

WHEREAS Dr. Seitz, as a pioneer in modern theory of solid state physics for metals, alloys, insulators and semiconductors, laid the foundations for such developments as the electronic devices and microcircuits that underpin modern information science and technology; and

WHEREAS Dr. Seitz, as President of the National Academy of Sciences, rendered great service to the engineering profession in the United States through his deep understanding and appreciation of the mutually complementary roles of science and engineering and their importance to the national welfare and through his major role in the formation of the National Academy of Engineering within the charter of the National Academy of Sciences;

NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the National Academy of Engineering hereby designates Frederick P. Seitz as a Distinguished Honoree of the Academy in recognition of his outstanding achievements and his distinguished service to the National Academy of Engineering, and advancement of science and education and the nation's welfare.
