The National Academy of Engineering’s Center for the Advancement of Scholarship on Engineering Education (CASEE) hosted an National Science Foundation sponsored (via a supplement to HRD-0533520) 3-day Colloquy on Minority Males in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics from August 9 – 12, 2010 at the Mount Washington Conference Center in Baltimore, Maryland. The colloquy provided a forum for identification, with specific reference to minority males compared to general population, of research theories and methodologies that help (1) frame approaches to investigate gender based factors which impact learning and choice in STEM education and STEM workforce; (2) encourage research that looks at differences within and among specific minority male populations; and (3) study societal, formal and informal educational systems’ interactions with individuals that encourage or discourage interest and persistence in study or career in certain STEM fields by minority males. Major products produced by the colloquy include (a) a draft solicitation summarizing major areas of inquiry with respect to access, participation, and success of minority males in STEM, and (b) detailed research questions along with discussion of theories and methodologies that frame their resolution.
