Three countries - USA, China & India - together contribute more than 50% of global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Massive urbanization in China & India is expected to increase GHG emissions. At the same time, the recent US-China Climate Agreement, the New-Type urbanization plan in China, and India’s 100 Smart Cities Program provide an opportunity to reduce GHG emissions by aligning the local priorities of more than 1 billion urban residents in these three nations with global carbon mitigation efforts.
Join us Sunday August 23, from 2:15PM to 4:30PM, for a session about the ethical and social consequences of increasing urbanization, through the lens of urban history and changing educational needs.
Join us Monday August 24, from 8:30AM to 2PM, for a science-policy dialogue to explore key urban infrastructure transformations in China, India and the US that can contribute to reducing global carbon emissions while addressing local environmental priorities of water and food security, air pollution, solid waste management, and inclusive well-being.

This workshop is part of an NSF PIRE project titled Developing Low Carbon and Sustainable Cities through Interdisciplinary Integration. The project is led by the University of Minnesota (UMN) with Yale University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Colorado Denver, National Center for Atmospheric Research, The National Academy of Engineering’s Center for Engineering Ethics and Society, and partner institutions in China - Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, and India – the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT-Kanpur & Madras) and ICLEI South Asia, based in Delhi.
