This year’s focus is on Autonomy on Land and Sea and in the Air and Space. The meeting will take place October 8–9 in the NAS Building (2101 Constitution Avenue NW, Washington).
Saturday, October 7: NAE orientation for the Class of 2017.
Sunday, October 8: Brunch will be served at 11:00 am and the public program will begin at 12:30 pm. NAE Chair Gordon R. England will give opening remarks, followed by the president’s address and then the induction of 84 new members and 22 foreign members who were elected in February. We will present the Simon Ramo Founders Award, the Arthur M. Bueche Award, and the Bernard M. Gordon Prize Lecture.
During the afternoon program two distinguished speakers will present plenary lectures on engineering research and innovation in different areas of autonomy. Joichi Ito, director of MIT Media Lab and professor of the practice in media arts and sciences, will talk about autonomy and artificial intelligence. Patrick Lin, director of the Ethics + Emerging Sciences Group at California Polytechnic State University, will discuss autonomy and ethics.
Monday, October 9: The day will begin with the NAE business session, followed by the forum, with an expert panel discussing developments in autonomous technologies for unmanned aircraft and space exploration systems, autonomous ships, and self-driving vehicles.
The afternoon will be devoted to NAE section meetings, which will be held at the NAS Building and the Keck Center.
In the morning, guests will have the option of attending the forum or taking a tour in Old Town Alexandria at the Torpedo Factory Art Center or two historical museums, the Apothecary and Gadsby’s Tavern. After the tour lunch will be provided for tour participants at Gadsby’s Tavern. For those opting to stay at the NAS Building, the Academies’ archivist will offer a tour of the historic building. Please be sure to sign up for your tour option in advance, as the guest programs do sell out quickly!
The day will conclude with our annual reception and dinner dance at the JW Marriott in downtown Washington.
