Washington, DC, May 02, 2017 —

The National Science Foundation (NSF) should re-invigorate its Engineering Research Center (ERC) program by addressing grand challenge-like problems whose solutions will greatly benefit society, according to a new report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. ERCs are partnerships between academia, industry, and government designed to produce transformational engineered systems and prepare engineering graduates for leadership roles in the global economy. The report's highlights include recommendations on enhancements that build upon current ERC multidisciplinary research team concepts and embracing best practices of value creation used by top U.S. corporations and organizations such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. In addition, it says investments should be made to attract top-notch and diverse talent who will have less administrative burdens while providing students with the full range of skills needed to be leaders in a multidisciplinary world.
