The 2009 international symposium convened representatives from the scientific, engineering, legal, ethical and policy communities along with members of the public to explore the opportunities and challenges posed by the emerging field of synthetic biology.
Key Contacts

The overarching goals of the meeting were to help foster this new community of professionals, to frame the language of the discussion and the issues, to identify issues and areas for future study, and to educate the public and policy-makers about this emerging field.

The OECD and the Royal Society issued a report on the symposium in May 2010. Read the report here.

Support for the Symposium was provided by the National Science Foundation, Sloan Foundation, and Biotechnology Industry Organization.

A planning meeting was held on October 22-25, 2008 at the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center in Bellagio, Italy.
